Bhavnagar to Palitana: A Complete Travel Guide

Just 55 kilometres from Bhavnagar lies one of the holiest sites in Jainism — Palitana, home to nearly 900 intricately carved marble temples crowning the Shatrunjaya hills. For pilgrims and curious travellers alike, it makes for a deeply rewarding day trip. Here is how to plan it well.
Getting there
The drive from Bhavnagar to Palitana takes about 1 to 1.5 hours on a good highway. A sedan such as the Hyundai Aura or Swift Dzire is perfect for couples and small families, while the Maruti Ertiga suits a group of up to six. Because the road is short and well-maintained, this is one of our most-booked fixed-fare routes.
The climb
From the base, around 3,500 stone steps lead up to the temple complex on Shatrunjaya. Most pilgrims begin before sunrise to beat the heat and reach the summit for the cool morning air. Allow 4 to 6 hours for a relaxed round trip on foot. Doli (palanquin) services are available for those who cannot climb.
What to carry
- Comfortable shoes for the base; the temple area itself is walked barefoot
- Water and light snacks (food is not allowed at the summit)
- A hat, sunscreen and a small towel
- Cash for doli services and offerings
Best time to visit
October to March offers the most pleasant weather. The temples close during the monsoon months. Plan to start early — our drivers are used to 4 AM and 5 AM departures from Bhavnagar so you can begin the climb at first light.
Tip: Combine Palitana with a Shankheshwar circuit if you have an extra day — we run that route as a fixed package too.
