Ahmedabad to Udaipur by cab: the cross-state heritage drive at a fixed fare

Ahmedabad to Udaipur is a road trip that takes you from Gujarat into Rajasthan in about five hours. We run this route most weekends — families heading for a long weekend at Lake Pichola, business travellers continuing to Jaipur, photographers chasing the City Palace at sunset. The drive itself is one of our favourites: highway, then green hills, then lake country.
Distance and drive time
By road it is 260 km, almost entirely on NH-48. A smooth run takes 4.5 to 5 hours. The road has been progressively widened over the last few years and is now genuinely good — four-laned for most of the distance, no major potholes, frequent petrol pumps. The border crossing at Shamlaji is a soft transition; you barely notice you have moved states.
The route
Ahmedabad → Himmatnagar → Shamlaji (Gujarat–Rajasthan border) → Dungarpur → Udaipur. Pickup is from anywhere in Ahmedabad — Sabarmati Riverfront, SG Highway, the airport, your hotel. From Ahmedabad it is a straight run north-east on NH-48. The most photogenic stretch is between Shamlaji and Udaipur, where the road winds through the Aravalli foothills.
What we charge
The fixed one-way Ahmedabad to Udaipur fare is ₹2,200 for a Hyundai Aura or Swift Dzire sedan, ₹2,500 for a Maruti Ertiga, and ₹3,800 for a Toyota Innova Crysta. These are some of our most competitive cross-state fares — all-inclusive of fuel, tolls (NH-48 has several), parking, driver bhatta and GST. For round-trip same-day bookings, ask for a package quote on WhatsApp.
Where we stop
- Himmatnagar — first major town, 90 minutes in, clean food and washroom break
- Shamlaji — the famous Shamlaji temple is right on the route; a short darshan stop adds only 20 minutes
- Dungarpur — small Rajasthani town with a beautiful palace if you want a quick photo break
Adding Eklingji on the way in
Eklingji temple is 22 km north of Udaipur and a popular Shaivite stop for many travellers. We can route through it on the way in — adds about 45 minutes to the total drive but lets you do the darshan before reaching the hotel. Mention it at booking and the driver will plan accordingly.
Things worth knowing about Udaipur
Udaipur's old town is narrow and most hotels around Lake Pichola are accessible only by smaller cars; our Aura or Dzire is the better choice if you are staying inside the old city. The Innova will park nearby but not directly at the door. Boat rides on Lake Pichola are best done at sunset. The City Palace closes at 5:30 PM — plan accordingly.
Common questions
Do you handle multi-day Rajasthan trips? Yes — we offer fixed packages for Udaipur–Jaipur–Jodhpur circuits; ask for a custom quote. Can the same driver stay overnight in Udaipur for the return? Yes — multi-day packages include driver lodging and meals. Is the road safe for night travel? Reasonably so until 10 PM; we do not recommend driving this stretch past midnight unless necessary.
